Joe Coleman is a hometown boy from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Coleman is a graduate of Hopkins high school.

Coleman was a spectacular prospect for the Gophers basketball team, coming in as 2011 Minnesota Mr. Basketball and an ESPN Top 100 recruit. Coleman captained his Hopkins team to the state championship with a 32-1 record as a senior. He averaged 21.5 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.7 steals per game, shooting 65.6% from the field.
