Jamal Abu-Shamala was born July 25, 1987 in Shakopee, Minnesota. He is a senior guard for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers. Jamal Abu-Shamala played high school basketball for Shakopee high school in Shakopee, Minnesota. He was named all-state his senior season and first team all-metro by the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Jamal Abu-Shamala helped the Shakopee basketball team win the state championship his senior year. He averaged 19.8 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.5 assists and shot 56 percent from the field, 79 percent from the line and 44 percent from three-point range. Abu-Shamala was an honor graduate and ‘A’ honor roll member. He earned letters in basketball and track & field.

Jamal Abu-Shamala was originally a walk-on in the fall of 2005 for the University of Minnesota. He has since earned a scholarship and a role in the playing rotation. He is an excellent outside shooter for the Gophers, he shot .431 (44-102) from three-point range during the 2007-08 season, the second-best season mark in Gopher history.

As a Gopher freshman, Jamal Abu-Shamala started his first game vs. Coastal Carolina on December 12th where he scored three points and grabbed four rebounds in 27 minutes. He also had a three-game stretch where he did not miss a field goal attempt, making 11 straight field goals.

As a Gopher sophomore Jamal Abu-Shamala averaged 8.2 points per game in conference action, improving from 4.8 in non-conference play. He played in all 31 games, making 20 starts and scored in double figures eight times. Jamal Abu-Shamala scored his 300th career point on February 10, 2007 at Big Ten Conference rival Michigan.

Jamal Abu-Shamala continued on strong during his junior year in 2007-2008. In a single game against Northwestern, Abu-Shamala scored a season-high 16 points.

With head coach Tubby Smith at the Gopher basketball helm, Jamal Abu-Shamala is looking forward to his final Gopher basketball season and improving his stats and the Gopher Mens Basketball team win loss record.
