Chris Halvorsen attended Henry Sibley High School in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was a four-year letterwinner for the Warriors and earned second team All-State honors following his senior season. Chris Halvorsen was also honored as All-Metro Defensive Player of the Year in 2009 and was a three-time All-Conference honoree. He helped lead Henry Sibley to the finish runner-up as a junior. Chris Halvorsen won the slam dunk contest during senior All-Star basketball series.

As a freshman, Chris Halvorsen attended Valparaiso. He played in 9 games established a season-high with an average of 1.0 points, o.7 rebounds and 4.4 minutes per game.

Halvorsen sat out the 2010-2011 season with the Minnesota Gophers due to transfer rules.
