Al Nolen Jr. was born February 11, 1989 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is a guard with the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers. He played high school basketball at Minneapolis Henry high school in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Nolen is the third Henry player to join the Gophers in the past two years joining Brandon Smith and Lawrence McKenzie.
In high school, Al Nolen averaged 14 points, eight assists, six rebounds and four steals his senior season and averaged 16 points and eight assists as a junior. He was team MVP and a finalist for the Minnesota Mr. Basketball award. Nolen was also the teammate of Gopher Blake Hoffarber on the Minnesota Magic Elite AAU Team and helped the Magic win the 2005 Kingwood Classic 16-and-under title.
In 2007-2008, during Al Nolen's freshman season, he had 64 steals, the 4th most in Gopher basketball history. He played in portions of nearly every game with 6 starts. In 2008-2009, Al Nolen started 31 games and averaged 6.5 points, 4.3 points, and 3 rebounds per game. In 2009-2010, Al Nolen started 17 games and averaged 6.7 points, 4.6 assists, and 3 rebounds.
At 6’1” Al Nolen is a pure point guard with excellent passing ability and is very good at attacking the floor. Al Nolen has solid court vision and a quick first step.
