Gopher Basketball Coach Tubby Smith Fired
Less than one day after the Gophers were eliminated from the NCAA tournament with their loss to Florida, Gophers athletic director Norwood Teague held a news conference Monday to announce Smith’s firing. This was a decision, Teague said, that came as the result of months of evaluation.
The 61-year-old Smith, who led Kentucky to a national championship in 1998, was coming off his first NCAA victory in six seasons here when the 11th-seeded Gophers topped sixth-seeded UCLA on Friday in Austin, Texas. That was not enough, however, to discourage Teague from what he called a necessary fresh start for the program.
We'll keep you updated with all the Tubby Smith news!

Stanford's Resurgence Seals Title
The Stanford Cardinals cruised past Minnesota, 75-51, to win the National Invitation Tournament at Madison Square Garden. The win sealed Stanford's first N.I.T. title since 1991.
Minnesota hit 5 of its first 7 shots, but then went nearly nine minutes without a field goal. The Cardinals then used their size advantage to prevent the Gophers from getting any scoring in transition.
Minnesota's season ended on a low note after the Gophers won six of their last seven games to make an impressive run at the N.I.T. title.
Minnesota Over Washington 68-67 OT
Minnesota is still alive in late March and it appears they have picked up the ability to close games.
The Gophers were short-handed as they improved to 3-3 in overtime games this season. Minnesota beat Washington 68-67 on Tuesday night in the NIT semifinals. Andre Hollins led the way for the Gophers with 20 points.
Hollins was particularly useful in the extra period, scoring five of Minnesota's seven points.
The sixth-seeded Golden Gophers move on to face No. 3 seed Stanford in Thursday night's championship game at Madison Square Garden. The Stanford Cardinals beat Massachusetts 74-64 in the first semifinal.

Minnesota Gophers 1-1 in Big Ten Tournament
Minnesota took down Northwestern in overtime, 75-68. The win moved the Gopher to 19-13 overall, with a 6-2 conference record.
Andre Hollins' game-tying layup in the final minute of regulation allowed the Gophers to move on to overtime with the Wildcats. The Gophers then went on to outscore Northwestern 14-7 in the extra frame to pull off the upset.
Fresh off a first-round upset over a seeded team, the Minnesota Gophers looked to do the same against the Michigan Wolverines in the Big Ten quarterfinals.
The win, however, did not go to the Gophers. The Gophers blew a nine-point lead in the final 4:37 of regulation. They botched two chances to win the game in closing seconds, but Trey Burke of Michigan wouldn't have it. The No.10 Michigan team rallied for a 73-69 overtime victory in Indianapolis.
The Gophers head home from Indianapolis as a 19-14 team.
Gophers Play in NIT Tournament
In the first round of the NIT Tournament, the Minnesota Gophers will take on the La Salle Explorers for the right to advance.
The Explorers are ranked as the three seed and also hold home court advantage. La Salle will look for big games out of Ramon Galloway and Earl Pettis.
The Gophers are coming off a rocky year in the Big 10, but look to turn it around in the NIT. Tubby Smith will count on Trevor Mbakwe to give La Salle a headache on the court.
The winner of the La Salle Minnesota game will move on to face either Miami (FL) or Valparaiso in the next round.
Good luck to the Minnesota Gophers - make us proud!

Both Austin Hollins and Andre Hollins had shots to win the game in the final seconds for Minnesota, but the Badgers managed to improve to 19-0 when leading or tied with 5 minutes left to play.
The Gophers have been trying to gain ground since their 0-4 start. The Minnesota team was one of five that began the night with five or six losses in the conference.
Minnesota Gophers Beat Illini
The Minnesota Gophers basketball team looked to be heading the same way as they did during their first showing against the Illinois Illini basketball team. The Gophers were struggling to execute in the final minutes, but managed to make a statement as they sent the Illini into overtime.
The Gophers tied the score on a last-second three-point play and finished off Illinois in overtime to grab their fourth victory in five games. The final score of the Gophers Illini game was 77-72.
With five seconds remaining in regulation and the Gophers sitting down by three, Austin Hollins drove to the basket, hitting a layup. Hollins was fouled by Meyers Leonard on the basket, allowing him to tie the game with a free throw. Hollins made the free throw to tie it at 64 and send the game to overtime.
Austin Hollins scored the final five points in regulation and hit consecutive free throws to start overtime. The Gophers only managed the victory despite getting just 13 combined points from Rodney Williams (six), Ralph Sampson III (five), and Julian Welch (two).

Minnesota Gophers - Michigan State Spartans Game Review
The Minnesota Gophers and the Michigan State Spartans took their rivalry to the court on Sunday and it didn't end well for the Gophers.
Early in the game, the score was 21-19 with the Gophers on top. Both teams were having difficulty in making a shot; the teams were equally 8-for-24 from the field. The Gophers did have an advantage though - the Spartans had found it difficult to get the ball inside of the Gophers' zone, taking 13 shots from behind the three-point line and only five from the lane.
In contrast, the Gophers used the size of Ralph Sampson III and Colton Iverson, coupled with the strength of Trevor Mbakwe, to take 12 shots in the lane. Only four of those 12 dropped, but nonetheless, the Gophers seemed to be in control.
The final was 53-48, Michigan. The Gophers only managed one free-throw in the closing 4 1/2 minutes. Those 4 1/2 minutes became the deciding factors as Durrell Summers (Michigan State) finally made a jump shot to cut the Gophers' lead to 47-46 after making two breakaway baskets.
Michigan State inched ahead and the Gophers called a timeout with 22 seconds left. With a three-point shot fired hard off the rim by Chip Armelin, the Spartans took the win.

Upcoming Minnesota Gopher Basketball Games:
Minnesota Gophers Top Northwestern Wildcats 81-70
The Minnesota Gophers overcame more setbacks in the game against the Wildcats, winning 81-70 at Williams Arena. The Gophers' latest setback left only eight players in the rotation and one true guard in the starting lineup.
Al Nolen's absence, however, didn't rattle the Gophers because the Gophers managed to utilize their big guys to muscle past Northwestern. Blake Hoffarber scored 20 points while playing, what is normally, Nolen's position of point guard. Trevor Mbakwe, who has had to overcome personal issues recently, stepped up with 18 points and 14 rebounds. The Minnesota Gophers simply wore down the Northwestern Wildcats!
The Minnesota Gophers are set to travel to #12 Purdue on Saturday the 29th.
Minnesota Gophers Boil the Boilermakers
The Minnesota Gophers Men's Basketball team went in to the game against Purdue in desperate need of a win. Thanks to Blake Hoffarber and some solid late-game defense, the mission was successful! Hoffarber's 26 points led the way offensively. The Golden Gophers' defense managed to hold the Boilermakers without a shot for the last nine minutes of the 70-67 victory in Minneapolis.
JaJaun Johnson led all scorers with 29 points accompanied by 11 rebounds while Lewis Jackson added 15. However, Purdue was unable to overcome the rough shooting night of E'Twaun Moore. Moore made just two of fourteen for the game.
Tubby Smith and company have dealt with many distractions lately, but were able to get out and run when the opportunity presented itself within the Gopher-Boilermakers game!

Minnesota Gophers Pull Out Win Over Indiana Hoosiers
The Minnesota Gophers downed the Indiana Hoosiers 67-63 in a game that looked like Indiana to the end. Indiana continues on as 0-3 in the Big Ten.
Coming into the game on an 0-2 conference skid, the Gophers were excited to secure their first conference victory. Though the Gophers were riddled with inconsistent half-court play and an inability to dominate the overmatched Hoosiers, they did pull out a W.
The Minnesota Gophers had just found out that Devoe Joseph was to depart the University of Minnesota. Reeling from that loss, many were interested to see how Minnesota would handle the situation. Minnesota came out gun-slinging.
Trevor Mbakwe scored seven of the team's first nine points. However, it became clear that Indiana would not sit back and take the loss easily. The Hoosiers hung with the Gophers before torching the team with a 19-6 run to take the lead 32-26.
The second half cleared up for the Gophers. Minnesota bore down on defense, utilizing the full court press occasionally. The Gophers held a 59-51 lead with just over five minutes remaining. The game ended up going down to the wire with the Hoosiers cutting the lead by Minnesota down to three. Minnesota did pull out the win, though, and is looking to the next game and, hopefully, next win.

After two close first round match ups in the three-point contest, Blake Hoffarber edged out Maverick Ahnmisi, then facing off with Devoe Joseph, who had narrowly beat Ralph Sampson III. In the final round, with a score of 9-7, Hoffarber was crowned the three-point competition champion.
Next on the court was the fan favorite slam dunk competition. This competition featured the Gophers' Oto Osenieks, Chip Armelin, Autin Hollins, and Trevor Mbakwe. After an entertaining and creative competition, Mbakwe was crowned the champion.
Continuing the festivities, the Maroon and Gold competition was a back-and-forth affair. Eventually, the Maroon won out with a 35-30 victory over the Gold in the 20 minute scrimmage.

Prized recruit Trevor Mbwakwe has been reinstated by Gophers athletic director Joel Maturi. After being suspended last season for unresolved legal issues, Trevor Mbwakwe is now cleared to play for the Minnesota Gophers. However, Mbwakwe has been rumored that he still may transfer to another school. It remains to be seen if he will stay or go. Here's to hoping he stays a Minnesota Gopher and can help the Gopher mens basketball team get to the Big Dance!
What to Look Forward to in 2010 Gopher Basketball
The 2010 Gopher Basketball season will be quickly approaching as summer flies by. The 2010 Gopher Basketball team will feature some key returners from last year's team with Blake Hoffarber, Colton Iverson, Ralph Sampson III, Devoe Joseph, Al Nolen, and Rodney Williams. Most Gopher fans hope Redshirt Junior Trevor Mbakwe will be back, but his return is still questionable after having to sit out last season with legal trouble.
Sophomores Bryant Allen and Dominique Dawson will look to get more action this season along with the new recruits. Incoming freshmen recruits to the mix will be Austin Hollins, Maurice Walker, Elliott Eliason, Maverick Ahanmisi, Oto Osenieks, and Eric Stark. The Gophers will look to build off of the 21-14 record last season and 9-9 conference record in the Big Ten. Coach Tubby Smith knows just what it takes to take the program to an elite level. The Gophers will take on the University of Virginia this year in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge as well as other competitive national programs.

So far the Gopher Basketball 2010 recruiting class looks like this:
Canada center Maurice Walker
Missing from the list is point guard Cory Joseph, brother of Gopher basketball sophomore Devoe Joseph, who signed with the Texas Longhorns basketball team last week. The Gophers should add a point guard to the 2010 recruits, but there aren't too many choices left.
Stay Tuned Gopher fans.
Gopher Rumor Mill: There has been talk that Royce White will return to the Gopher basketball roster next season if he and Tubby Smith can work out a deal.

Congratulations to the Duke Blue Devils for their 61-59 victory over Butler for the national championship last night at Lucas Oil Stadium Indianapolis. Gophers at the Minnesota State Fair
Every year I spend plenty of time visiting the University of Minnesota display (building, really) at the Minnesota State Fair. This year was no exception. I decided not to wait in line for the free bag giveaway (I have done that before!), but I did hit up one of the University of Minnesota reps to ask about the Gopher Basketball Schedule. The University student liaison said that the Gopher Basketball Schedule should be out next week and that it is being held up as the Big Ten works out final dates and tip-off times with TV networks. It seems every other conference already has its schedule out, come on Big Ten, let's get organized!
Have a great Labor Day weekend Gopher Basketball fans - I will be at the Minnesota Gopher Football game on Saturday and then tuned back into my relentless Gopher Basketball Schedule look-out for next week!

Tollackson worked out at the Target Center with the Timberwolves staff last month in hopes of catching the eye of an NBA team or even a summer league, but it turned out the workouts were more in preparation for his career overseas than for joining the NBA.
Spencer Tollackson recently signed a contract with the Digibu Baskets from Paderborn, Germany. Paderborn is a 144,000 person city in central Germany. The Digibu Baskets Paderborns are part of the top professional league in Germany so Spencer Tollackson will have a chance to compete against other great athletes. Germany is a long way from Tollackson's hometown of Chaska, Minnesota, but it is a chance to do what he loves as a job every day. Best of luck to you Spencer Tollackson - show the Germans what us Minnesota boys have got!

Verdell Jones III announced Monday he would play for the Indiana Hoosiers next season instead of the Minnesota Gophers. The announcement was disappointing, but certainly not disasterous for the Gopher Mens Basketball future. Tubby Smith still has 5 of the best players coming to Gopher bench next year. His recruited class is being touted as one of the best classes in Gopher Basketball for over 20 years.
Tubby Smith's recruits consist of junior college player of the year Devron Bostick, fellow junior college transfer Paul Carter and high school standouts Devoe Joseph, Colton Iverson and Ralph Sampson III.

Lawrence Westbrook recovering from Surgery
Minnesota Gopher basketball player Lawrence Westbrook recently underwent surgery on his right hand to correct ligament damage he played with all season. Westbrook started in all 34 games for the Golden Gophers Mens basketball team last season and is praised as a dynamic scorer who can put points up in a hurry. Despite playing injured, Lawrence Westbrook had a great season with the Gophers including shooting perfect 4-of-4 from the field and scoring 10 points in 15 minutes against Illinois Illini in March and scoring a career high 17 points in the Big Ten Tournament opener against the Northwestern Wildcats.
Lawrence Westbrook said that he will probably be unable to play basketball for the next four months. Get well soon, Lawrence Westbrook, this Gopher Basketball team will need you back on the Williams Arena court next year!

Williams Arena averaged over 2,000 more fans per Gopher mens basketball game this season than in 2006-07 and recorded a season average of 12,988 fans, the second highest season average in over a decade. Gophers lose NIT game, end Gopher basketball season
After an 11-win turnaround from a year ago, the Minnesota Gophers were rewarded with a berth in the NIT. The Gophers were the number 4 seed and played Maryland Terrapins at Williams Arena on Tuesday night. The Gophers home court advantage wasn't enough to propel the Gophers to victory in the first round of the NIT Tournament. The Gophers suffered a heart wrenching 58-68 loss to Maryland in front of a packed Williams Arena crowd. In fact the Gophers trailed by just one point at intermission, but Maryland opened the second half with a 12-2 run to take a 45-34 lead and never looked back.
The Gopher NIT loss ends the Gopher Basketball season, but be sure to check back to gopherbasketballtickets.com for Gopher Basketball news and Gopher basketball ticket deals for next season! Thanks for a great season Gophers!
Gopher Basketball wins continue Tubby Smith streak
The Gopher mens basketball team won two games in Indiana giving Tubby Smith another year of 20 wins. It was Smiths 15th straight 20 win season, the longest active streak in the nation. The Gophers beat Northwestern 55-52 and Indiana 59-58 with a Blake Hoffarber buzzer beater for the record books. Both games were intense and the Gophers basketball team showed basketball critics how far they have come since last year.
The Gophers couldn't continue their Cinderella story past Illinois, though, losing a close match-up 50-54.
Gopher Basketball plays in Big Ten Tournament
The Gopher basketball team (18-12, 8-10) will be playing in the Big Ten Tournament in Indianapolis tonight. Unless the Gophers win the Big Ten tournament, coach Tubby Smith's streak of 14 straight NCAA tournament appearances will end this season. Coach Smith knew that would probably be the case when he agreed to join the Gopher program, but coach Smith hopes to continue a different streak. Coach Tubby Smith has a 14 consecutive 20-victory season streak that could be salvaged if Minnesota plays well in Indianapolis. Let's go Gopher Hoops!
Gopher Basketball Loses Final Two Games
The Gopher mens basketball team lost its final two games of the regular 2007-08 Gopher basketball season. The Gophers lost to the Indiana Hoosiers 55-69 in Indiana last Wednesday and then lost to the Illinois Illini 58-67 in Illinois last Saturday. Illinois was very aggressive with the ball and Illinois outrebounded the Gophers 45-19.
Both losses were extremely disappointing to the Gopher basketball team. Gopher Damian Johnson said, "We've got to learn from the last two games. The last game (a 69-55 loss at Indiana), we tie the game with seven minutes to go, this game with like four minutes to go; we just lost it. We lost our composure. We've got to make sure we can sustain the same momentum throughout the whole game."
This Gopher Basketball fan definitely agrees and looks forward to bigger and better things down the road for a growing Gopher Basketball program!
Minnesota Basketball on the Road

The Minnesota Gophers set "the barn" on fire with a win over Penn State last Sunday, beating the Nittany Lions basketball team 75-68. The Gopher victory moved the Gophers to 7-7 in the Big Ten and 17-9 overall.
Lawrence Westbrook scored 15 points, making all six of his free throws. Lawrence McKenzie had 11 points and Blake Hoffarber added 10 points. It was a back and forth game for the Gophers and at one point, the Penn State Nittany Lions secured a 13 point lead, but the Gophers didn't give up and sent the Penn State Nittany Lions packing. The Nittany Lions have not won at Williams Arena since February 14, 2001. Way to keep the streak alive Gophers!
Gophers beat Wolverines at Williams Arena
The Golden Gopher mens basketball team beat the Michigan Wolverines 69-60 in front of a riled up Williams Arena crowd. Prior to the game, Gopher coach Tubby Smith made sure his players understood that a bad loss at home would end their already small chances of making the NCAA tournament. Coach Smith took a chance that the added pressure would work to inspire his team to play more gritty and it did. The Gophers snapped the Wolverines win streak and quickly boosted fan and team morale!
Gophers senior guard Lawrence McKenzie scored a career-high 26 points against the Wolverines and tied a school record for three-pointers in a Big Ten game with seven. If the Gopher Basketball team keeps sinking big baskets, you can bet Gopher Basketball tickets will only get hotter! Go Gophers!

Gophers Lose to Illinois in front of sellout Williams Arena crowd
The Golden Gopher mens basketball team lost to Illinois Illini at the Barn 84-60. It was a huge disappointment for Gopher fans at Williams Arena and a huge disappointment for the Gopher Basketball team that had set a goal to win, at the very least, the remaining home games of the season.
Illinois is not having a stellar season, but the Gophers shot only 20 percent from the field in the second half and were outscored 28-9 to start the second half. The Gophers trailed the entire game and it was a heart breaker for the sellout Williams Arena crowd. Gophers beat Iowa, face Illinois at Williams Arena
The Gopher mens basketball team beat the Iowa Hawkeyes 63-50 in front of a packed Williams Arena and a national ESPN television audience. The win moves the Gophers to 15-7 overall and 5-5 in the Big Ten. Lawrence McKenzie, Spencer Tollackson, Damian Johnson and Al Nolen led the Gophers with 11 points each. The team really came together and was excited to get a Big Ten victory especially at home in front of their adoring fans.
Another home game victory vs Illinois tonight would really help the Gophers in the Big Ten standings.
Gophers beat Northwestern, Face Iowa at Home
The Minnesota Golden Gophers mens basketball team beat an ailing Northwestern Wildcats team in Illinois 92-72. After the embarrassing loss to the Badgers, the Gophers needed to prove their team wasn't third class. The Gophers played in front of the smallest crowd yet as only 2,872 fans showed up at Welsh-Ryan Arena, partly because of a snowstorm and partly because Northwestern hasn't done much to impress its' fans this year and this game was no exception.
The Gophers came out strong and quickly mastered Northwestern's zone defense. The Gophers made 12 three point baskets and pounded inside. Blake Hoffarber got his first start as a Golden Gopher and finished the night with 15 points. "I was definitely excited; ever since I was little, I dreamed of coming out and being on the starting team, and tonight it happened," he said.
Next up for the Gophers is a match-up against Iowa Hawkeyes at Williams Arena on Saturday February 9th.

Gophers beat Michigan, but get embarrassed by the Badgers
The Gopher mens basketball team managed to beat the Michigan Wolverines on the road last Thursday 77-65, but then lost a huge Gopher Badger match-up at Williams Arena.
The Gophers hosted the Wisconsin Badgers on Sunday and got slammed to their own home court 47-63. The Gophers came out flat and never recovered. The match-up appeared very uneven and was a tough loss for the packed Williams Arena. It was clear that no. 13 ranked Wisconsin was there to annihilate and the Gophers didn't have what it took to respond. Coach Tubby Smith was so irritated that his seniors couldn't perform, he ended up benching them for nine minutes. The Gophers will need to put that loss behind them and hope to rack up other wins in the near future. Sunday's loss was the team's fourth in five games, come on Gophers get it together.
Gophers lose to Ohio State, face Michigan on the road
The Minnesota Gopher basketball team lost to Ohio State Buckeyes 60-76 last Saturday night in Columbus. Gopher freshman point guard Al Nolen was back on the court after missing several games due to injury, but his presence wasn't enough to spark the Gophers to victory. The Gophers were outscored 0-11 in the first few minutes, but did manage to come within three points in the second half.
Gophers basketball is one hot ticket
The Minnesota Gophers men's basketball team is certainly a hot ticket these days. The Gopher men sold out a second straight game at Williams Arena last Sunday when they hosted Michigan State. Williams Arena was packed with 14,625 basketball fans most wearing Gopher gold t-shirts. That's more than the Minnesota Timberwolves can say they bring in the Target Center these days. The Gophers have obviously overtaken the Timberwolves as the basketball show of choice here in the Twin Cities. Get some hot Gopher tickets or cheap Timberwolves tickets now. Either way you can't lose.
Gophers lose at Williams Arena
The University of Minnesota Golden Gopher mens basketball team lost its last two Big Ten basketball games. The Gophers lost to Indiana 60-65 and then to Michigan State 73-78. The Gophers will need to win one of the road contests to stop a potential downward spiral.
Gophers beat Penn State, Head Back to Williams Arena for more Big Ten games
The Minnesota Gophers mens basketball team beat the Penn State Nittany Lions last Saturday 76-73. It was a hard fought victory as the Gophers overcame a 16 point second half deficit. It was the Gophers first Big Ten road victory of the season. The Gophers sank crucial free throws in the last seconds to secure the victory. Gopher freshman Al Nolen intercepted a cross-court pass and after being fouled converted both of his free throws. The win was not just a one man effort, though, it was an entire Gopher team effort and the willingness of coach Tubby Smith to play the entire bench was a key strategy in the win. Blake Hoffarber and Spencer Tollackson each finished with 19 points and Lawrence McKenzie scored 12.

Gophers back at the Barn on Saturday
Gophers get first loss of the season
The Gophers basketball team traveled to Tallahassee to take on Florida State Seminoles, but the Florida State defense was too much for the Gophers to handle and the maroon and gold fell 75-61. It was the first loss for the Gopher basketball team under new head coach Tubby Smith. True freshman guard Blake Hoffarber was a bright spot for the Gophers, as he came off the bench to score a team-high 12 points. Gopher Sophomore Lawrence Westbrook, who scored 11 points, said turnovers and fouls were the difference. Florida State forced 17 turnovers on 11 steals and shot 27 for 32 from the foul line.
Tubbys defense works
It's no secret the Golden Gopher basketball team is playing differently this year than they did last year. A lot of the players are the same, but the coach is different and so is his approach to Gopher basketball. Tubby Smith teaches and preaches ball-line defense. His strong emphasis on getting players between the ball and the basket have led the Gophers to a first place standing in the Big Ten for steals in a game (11.67) and blocks (6.3), and fourth in scoring defense (56.3 points) and three-point field goal defense (31.5 percent).

Gophers win on the road
The Gophers basketball team won their second game of the season and their first road win under the direction of Tubby Smith. The Gophers beat Iowa State 68-58 and proved that coaching does make a difference. This same team lost the game to Iowa State last year, but this year the Gophers' senior trio of Lawrence McKenzie, Spencer Tollackson and Dan Coleman each scored in double figures and combined for 51 of the Gophers' 68 points. A hostile crowd of 13,709 berated the Gophers at times, but the maroon and gold came back from a six-point second half deficit to win the game.
Ralph Sampson III Commits to Gophers
Tubby Smith pulled off a recruiting miracle when he received a commitment for Ralph Sampson III. Sampson was heavily recruited by Kentucky, Maryland, Virginia Tech, South Carolina, Georgia Tech, Clemson, Auburn and Minnesota. However, in the end Sampson couldn't resist the opportunity to be coached by coaching legend Tubby Smith. It is so nice to have a basketball coach that demands respect and has given the Gopher Basketball Program credibility.
Ralph Sampson III is currently a senior at Northview High School in Duluth, GA. He is considered a player with an extreme upside that excels as a shot blocker and defensive player. He is ranked the 14th best center in this year's senior class by scouthoops.com.
I can't wait to watch Sampson run up and down the hard wood floor at Williams Arena next year. His basketball pedigree, his 6-11 frame and his athletic ability lead me to believe that he will some day become a special player for the Golden Gophers. Is it next year yet?
Gopher vs. Army Regular Season Opener
The Gophers' basketball regular season will commence when they take on Army on Saturday at Williams Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. The Army Black Knights return 16 players from last season, including leading scorer and All-Patriot League pick Jarell Brown. Tubby Smith and the Gopher basketball team will have to be ready to play some tough basketball, but this Gopher basketball fan is looking forward to a victory! Buy your Gopher Army tickets now!
Gophers fans: After the big basketball game, walk across the street to Mariucci Arena and see your Golden Gopher hockey team take on Minnesota State Mankato at 7:07 p.m. Make it a UofM Gopher Double Header! See ya on Campus!
Gophers win second Exhibition contest
The Golden Gopher mens basketball team wrapped up their exhibition schedule in style with a victory over Southwest Minnesota State last night. The Gophers were led by freshman point guard Al Nolen who came off the bench with a perfect shooting game, scoring 24 points on 6-of-6 shooting and 7-of-7 from the free throw line. Nolen helped the maroon and gold beat the Mustangs 88-52.
The Gophers really turned up the heat in the second half, outscoring the Mustangs 50-19 and proved they have the stamina to play the crucial final minutes of any game. Gopher senior Lawrence McKenzie sat out, but seniors Dan Coleman and Spencer Tollackson each racked up 16 points. The Gopher basketball team is looking strong and it should be a fun a season! Go Gophers!
Gophers beat Mavericks in Exhibition at Williams Arena
The University of Minnesota Mens Basketball team chalked up their first victory under new head coach Tubby Smith. It was only a preseason victory against Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks, but a victory none the less.
The Gopher seniors led the team just as Tubby Smith had expected them to. Lawrence McKenzie, Dan Coleman and Spencer Tollackson combined for 52 points to rocket the Gophers to a 94-68 victory.
The Thursday night game in Williams Arena was electrifying for the 11,000+ Gopher basketball fans. This Gopher basketball fan is ready for a new era of Gopher basketball and I may just get it with coaching legend Tubby Smith and his up-tempo team of maroon and gold.
Gophers vs. Mavericks at Williams Arena
The Minnesota Golden Gophers will host their first game of the new season at Williams Arena tonight. The game is only an exhibition game against in-state rivals Minnesota State Mavericks from Mankato, but it will be the first time Minnesota basketball fans will get to see Coach Tubby Smith in action as the University's basketball leader.
The maroon and gold roster is a little thin, but Tubby is excited to see how the team will play together in a real game set-up. As a preseason game, the outcome will not count towards the official season record, but a Golden Gopher win would mean bragging rights and a self-esteem boost for a Gopher basketball team that finished 9-22 last year.
Gopher Basketball Home Opener
The University of Minnesota men's basketball team's regular season opener vs. Army at Williams Arena is on Saturday, November 10th, it will tip off at 2 p.m.
The game will be the first official regular-season contest of the Tubby Smith era and just the second meeting all time between the Gophers and the Cadets. Minnesota defeated Army, 79-37, in the first game between the two programs on December 28, 1981 at Williams Arena. Let's hope the Gophers can win another one to start the new Gopher basketball season off right!

Gopher Basketball Ready to Start
The Golden Gopher Mens Basketball team will tip off their preseason games on Thursday November 1st vs. Minnesota State and then will host Southwest Minnesota State on Tuesday, November 6th. Both games will be played on Gophers home court, Williams Arena.
New coach Tubby Smith is excited to get his maroon and gold team out on the court. Last week, Williams arena was filled with several thousand gopher fans decked out in gold "It's Tubby Time!" t-shirts.
Tubby Smith Tip-Off Event
This Friday coach Tubby Smith is inviting all Gopher Basketball fans to Williams Arena for some old fashioned Minnesota basketball fun. Admission is free! There will be a scrimmage, a slam dunk contest, a 3 point contest, prizes, music, free food and more. This should be a great tip-off to the Gopher basketball season. University of Minnesota Golden Gopher basketball fans should be excited to get their first glance at Tubby Smith on his new home court, Williams Arena. Doors open at 8:45pm and activities start at 9:00pm. We'll see ya there Golden Gopher fans! Go Gophers!
Big Ten prediction for Minnesota Hoops
Athlon Sports featured Gophers coach Tubby Smith on the cover of its new college basketball preview magazine. Smith has some outsiders already expecting better things from a Gopher basketball team that finished 9th in the Big Ten Conference last season.
Athlon predicts the Gophers will finish seventh in the Big Ten this season above Michigan, Penn State, Iowa and Northwestern.
Gophers basketball head coach Tubby Smith has a new recruit under his belt. Colton Iverson of Yankton, South Dakota committed to the Golden Gophers after meeting with Smith again this week. Tubby spent Wednesday in Yankton (population < 14,000) guest speaking at the Yankton Quarterback Club, making an appearance at Iversons school and having dinner with the Iverson family. As a 6'90" power forward Colton Iverson has the ability to make big plays on the Williams Arena court and Gopher basketball fans will be excited to see him play for the maroon and gold.
Gophers Basketball Schedule Set
The University of Minnesota men's basketball schedule is finally complete. The Golden Gophers open the regular season at home on Saturday, November 10, against Army. The game will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network and is one of 19 times the Gophers will appear on the Big Ten Network this season.
Williams Arena will get rocking on Thursday, November 1st when the Golden Gophers take on Minnesota State at 7 p.m. in the first exhibition game of the Tubby Smith era. Perhaps one of the most understated games of the year will be when the Gophers travel to Ames, Iowa for a matchup with the Iowa State Cyclones at 7 p.m., on November 20th. There are a lot of Iowa State Alumni in the Twin Cities area and Ames is only a couple hours drive away so I expect the arena to be packed with fans for both sides.
The Gophers will definitely start the season in their favor as they have a five-game homestand from December 1 to December 22nd that includes games against North Dakota State, South Dakota State, and Colorado State. Historically, these games have brought a lot of fans to Williams Arena and with a new head coach at the helm this year will be no exception so buy your Gopher Basketball tickets early!
Tubby Smith Recruits
Tubby Smith is known for his great recruiting skills and this Gopher Basketball fan is certain his big name and big rap sheet will help pull big talent into Williams Arena. Tubby may be starting slow in getting big players to sign on the dotted line. In fact, Tubby Smith's first recruit, Nate Garth, changed his mind about committing to the University of Minnesota. Garth is a 6-foot-4 senior point guard at Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas. He said he had a phone conversation with Tubby Smith, and they both decided it was best for him to reopen his recruitment. "It's nothing against (Smith) or against me," Garth said. "The relationship is still fine. There were just a couple new factors."
Garth, who still plans to make an official visit to the University of Minnesota in mid-September, said the Golden Gophers are among his top three schools, along with California and New Mexico.
Tubby Smith's lone recruit for the 2008 class is now Missouri State-West Plains Community College freshman Paul Carter, a 6-foot-8 forward, who committed Tuesday to the Gopher Basketball team.
Gophers Search for Chemistry, Road Toughness
One thing the University of Minnesota Gophers men's basketball team might want to work on this year is becoming more poised on the road. The Gophers finished a dismal 1-10 away from their home court last season. If any coach in the Division I basketball can remedy a shaky road team, it's Tubby Smith, so look for the Gophers to improve on the road.
The Gophers come into the 2007-08 season with no significant losses, as their three leading scorers in Lawrence McKenzie, Dan Coleman and Spencer Tollackson are all returning. If the three players can gel this season and use positive chemistry to their advantage, they might be able to upset more talented Big Ten teams under Smith's guidance. Look for McKenzie to jack up more three-pointers this season - he set school records for three-pointers made and taken last season. Hopefully the trigger-happy McKenzie won't upset the inside-oriented Tollackson and Coleman.
Bryce Webster Released from Scholarship
The Minnesota Gophers men's basketball team announced it would release 6-9 center Bryce Webster from his basketball scholarship. Webster now has the chance to sit out a year at another Division I school or to play next year at a Division II or III school. Webster follows in the footsteps of another exceptional St. Thomas Academy big man in Issac Rosefelt, who left the Division I Bowling Green to play Division III basketball ball at the University of St. Thomas.
When I played against Webster in high school, he was a strong big man with a nice free throw, but little else outside of the paint. Webster only mustered 1.2 points, 1.7 rebounds in 9.3 minutes last season. He was given the chance to start seven games, and was usually promptly removed by coach Dan Monson. The Gophers and Tubby Smith are probably doing themselves a favor by unloading the sluggish footwork of Webster and giving a scholarship to one of Tubby's recruits.
Gophers Big Ten Schedule Set
The Big Ten portion of the Minnesota Golden Gophers men's basketball team's schedule was released Tuesday. The Gophers will face 18 Big Ten opponents, up from 16 last year. The first Big Ten matchup will be at the Michigan State Spartans on January 5 in East Lansing, Michigan. The first home Big Ten game will be against the Northwestern Wildcats on Wednesday, January 9. The Gophers will be on the ESPN family of networks at least three times during their conference schedule: January 17 at home against the Indiana Hoosiers; February 9 at home against the Iowa Hawkeyes; and February 21 at home against the Michigan Wolverines. In the 18 game Big Ten schedule format, the Gophers will only play the Hawkeyes and the Purdue Boilermakers once. Don't miss out on tickets to The Barn to see some intense Big Ten action!
Tubby Smith busy as Ever
New Minnesota Gophers men's basketball coach Tubby Smith hasn't been very vocal in the media over the last couple of weeks, but he told the Star Tribune that it's not a cause for concern for Gopher basketball fans. Smith has been very busy searching for high school seniors and closing on his Minneapolis house. Other things Smith has been working on include getting to know returning players, serving on national coaching committees and monitoring his charity work. Smith's work is going to be cut out for him in the upcoming season and especially after next season, when he gets his chance to lay down the foundation of the Gophers men's basketball future. Perhaps the three best Gophers players are graduating this year in Dan Coleman, Spencer Tollackson and Lawrence McKenzie.
Gophers will Look to Upset Big Ten Powerhouses
This year's Minnesota Golden Gophers men's basketball team looks to rebound from a disappointing 2006-07 season, and it all starts with the new man stalking the sidelines, Tubby Smith. Smith can't be expected to turn this Gopher team around in one season, but hopefully we'll see these same Gophers players go out on the floor with more vigor and will power to stay with more talented teams in the second half. College basketball is all about the upsets, and this Gopher squad of relatively unknown players on the national level fronted by a prominent coach like Tubby Smith could be the perfect candidate to pull off some of the biggest Big 10 upsets of the year. Look out Bo Ryan, believe it that Tubby is gunning for you this year.
Humphries Hangs Out with the Kids
Former Minnesota Golden Gopher player and current Toronto Raptor Kris Humphries spent last weekend at the North Dakota State Fair's NBA booth in Minot, ND. He was mostly busy playing some ball with kids of all ages who showed up at the booth. He was at the booth on both Saturday and Sunday.
"I have a foundation that supports inner city youth at risk and I do a lot of stuff during the season that involves the community and trying to make a difference," Humphries told KXMB Bismarck.
Former Wolves Assistant Excited to Coach College Again
Minnesota Gophers Men's basketball will have another great basketball mind on the sidelines in assistant coach Vince Taylor this upcoming season. Taylor had spent two seasons on the Minnesota Timberwolves' bench before deciding to join Tubby Smith at the University of Minnesota. Previously, Taylor had experience with college level coaching at Louisville under Rick Pitino. Now that Taylor is working with Smith, he can compare the two great coaches. Taylor calls Pitino more "outspoken" and Smith more "reserved," but cites both as brilliant coaches.
Taylor is excited to get back to the college level because in some aspects, coaching college players is more difficult than the pros. Pro players are grown men, and after games and practices go off to do their own things while college athletes need more mentoring. Taylor looks forward to working with Tubby Smith and helping the Gophers men's basketball team mature into a winning program. It starts with helping the players achieve their goals, and from there the Gophers can start winning!
Tubby Smith Visits Gopher Greats
Minnesota Gophers basketball head coach, Tubby Smith, continues to shine in the public eye. Last week, Smith welcomed back Golden Gopher Basketball greats John Kundla and Grant Johnson for a visit to Williams Arena. Kundla and Johnson are the only two surviving members of Minnesota's 1937 Big Ten Championship Team. Both former Gopher basketball stars stated their visit with Tubby and the tour of Williams Arena was one of the best things that they had done in a long time.
Coach Smith continues to charm the Minnesota public and hopefully will win back lost Gopher basketball fans. Coach Smith said, "As the season gets closer, we hope more and more former Gophers return to the Barn and reconnect with our program." I am sure Tubby hopes former Gopher fans return as well. If Tubby can keep up his fantastic PR skills, I am sure he will be able to win over Gopher basketball fans and sell plenty of Gopher basketball tickets!
Coleman and Tollackson Coming Back as Expected
The two Minnesota Golden Gophers men's basketball players who declared eligible for Thursday's 2007 NBA Draft both withdrew their names last week. Both Spencer Tollackson and Dan Coleman were expected to pull their names off the official draft list, as they would most likely been selected in the second round if at all. The two Gophers forwards initially entered the draft with little hopes of garnering any pre-draft buzz, but the players' actions were mostly intended to improve future stock, specifically for the 2008 draft, as both players will play their senior season next year.
Coleman and Tollackson withdrew their names along with 46 other players from the originally 83 player long list. The NBA Draft will include 60 selections this year by the league's 30 teams.
Now that Golden Gopher basketball fans know that two of their best players are coming back for next season, tickets for next season's Gophers basketball team will maintain popularity.
Smith Gaining Minnesota Celebrity Status
Evidently, part of Tubby Smith's Minnesota initiation includes discovering the great northern land of the state. Smith, women's basketball coach Pam Borton and women's hockey coach Laura Halldorson were on hand in Grand Rapids, Minnesota as part of the Minnesota Golden Gophers Coaches Caravan. Smith told the Grand Rapids crowd that he has never received a warmer welcome from any other place he has been invited to coach than Minnesota. Lately, Smith has been involved extensively in getting to know Minnesota better. He was recently invited into the booth of a Minnesota Twins television broadcast in addition to his travels outstate. So far, Smith has done a great job in raising awareness in Minnesota about the Minnesota Gophers men's basketball team and his intention to turn the team around.
Basketball Staff Finalized
Gophers basketball head coach Tubby Smith has finalized his staff for the 2007-08 season. Smith named Ron Jirsa, Vince Taylor, and Saul Smith assistant coaches and Joe Esposito, Director of Basketball Operations. Smith said. "I have close professional and personal ties to each coach on this staff, and with familiarity brings understanding, of the way we want to run this program. They understand what it will take to bring the Gopher program to the top of college basketball."
Associate Head Coach Ron Jirsa has coached with Smith 3 prior times in his 24-year collegiate coaching career. In his seasons with Smith, Jirsa helped four consecutive teams win at least 21 games and reach the NCAA Tournament each season.
Assistant Coach Saul Smith, son to head coach Tubby Smith, has served the past three seasons as an assistant coach at Tennessee Tech under head coach Mike Sutton where he was involved in all phases of the program, including player development, recruiting, organization, on-floor coaching and academics. Saul Smith also lettered four years at Kentucky under his father, and started at point guard for the Wildcats in each of his final two seasons. He was part of winning three SEC Championships, three SEC Tournament titles and one NCAA National Championship. Assistant Coach Vince Taylor joins Coach Smith's staff after spending the previous two seasons with the NBA Minnesota Timberwolves. With the Wolves, Taylor was responsible for player development.
Director of Basketball Operations Joe Esposito will be in charge of all administrative duties of the Golden Gopher basketball program. Esposito's relationship with Coach Smith dates back to his tenure as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator at Tennessee State.
With the Gopher basketball coaching staff finalized, recruiting should be in full force as Tubby Smith tries to rebuild the gopher basketball legacy.
Maturi Making Right Moves, Smith Emanates Confidence
I'm kind of getting frightened by how serious Minnesota Gophers athletic director Joel Maturi has gotten at making Gophers sports more nationally recognized. Maturi hired Tubby Smith whose name itself makes the Gophers credible, but even football coach Tim Brewster, as lesser known head coach appointee, has said he is dedicated to winning the Big Ten and actually believes it. On the subject of Tubby though, he has just announced his appointments as his coaching staff on Tuesday. They include Ron Jirsa as associate Head Coach, Vince Taylor and Smith's son Saul as assistant coaches and Joe Esposito as director of basketball operations. Smith said that he has "close professional and personal ties to each coach" on his staff, and "with familiarity bring understanding." Smith added that he wants "to bring the Gopher program to the top of college basketball." Scary. Or just unheard of by Gopher fans? Get tickets now to see Tubby this winter!
Tubby Having a Busy Spring
Two big names the Minnesota Gophers basketball team is looking at are Ralph Sampson III from Georgia and Stan Simpson from Chicago. According to Ryan James of Gophersillustrated.com, head coach Tubby Smith has been going to spring national AAU tournaments throughout the country in search of the big men of the future. Sampson has been wowing crowds this spring, and Simpson has played attention-grabbing basketball as well. Smith is also looking at Chris Johnson out of Brookhaven High School in Columbus, Ohio, a school some Gophers fans might be familiar with as the Gopher football team took three players from it last year.
Tubby Networks with New Network
The Minnesota Golden Gophers men's basketball team got another recruiting tool with the announcement of the Big Ten Network, which will expand national media coverage for Big Ten teams starting in August. Now, when Minnesota Gophers coach Tubby Smith visits player's families, he can tell them that they can watch their son on television no matter where they are in the United States. High profile high school players want to go to high profile schools and get as much exposure as they can in attempt to sign that first big NBA contract, but recently the University of Minnesota hasn't been the place to get that kind of exposure. The Big Ten Network, which will chose games to televise after CBS and ESPN get first dibs, hopes to change this trend. Smith has already been able to recruit Texas guard Nate Garth, let's hope the combination Smith and a new television network will attract even more solid talent to the Minnesota Gophers.
Smith Starts Recruiting
Minnesota Golden Gophers head basketball coach Tubby Smith has attracted his first recruit, a 6-foot-4 point guard named Nate Garth out of Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas. In his senior year of high school, Nate Garth posted numbers of 18 points a game, eight assists and three steals. Garth didn't even need to make an official visit to the University of Minnesota to decide he wanted to play for Tubby Smith.
"With the work ethic (Tubby) has, he's going to turn things around quickly," Garth said in an interview with the Pioneer Press.
Back when Smith was at Kentucky, he had originally scouted the Woodrow Wilson team for another one of its players, but Garth caught his eye as well, and with the current point-guard situation as it is with the Gophers, Smith decided to offer a scholarship to Garth to play at Minnesota.
Tubby's Son named Assistant Coach
To go with new Minnesota Golden Gophers head coach Tubby Smith, the University of Minnesota has also brought in Smith's son, Saul, to be an assistant coach. Saul Smith has experience as an assistant coach with Tennessee Tech. With Saul Smith as assistant coach, the Gophers continue to bring in a history of winning, as the younger Smith won a NCAA National Championship with Kentucky as a player under his father. As far as helping his father recruit at the University of Minnesota, Smith said it's not difficult to get prospects excited.
"This is a good school in a well-known conference, so it is pretty easy getting people to listen when you say "Minnesota Basketball,"' Smith said in a May 3 interview with gophersports.com. "People actually pick up the phone to call you back."
Along with his national championship, Saul Smith was part of three SEC Championships and three SEC Tournament titles.
Vitale Praises Gophers Acquisition of Smith
College basketball expert and analyst Dick Vitale called Tubby Smith "one of the greatest steals" in NCAA coaching history in favor of the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Vitale was at the Minnesota Twins vs. Tampa Bay Devil Rays game on Thursday night when he was interviewed by Marney Gellner of Fox Sports Net North. Vitale is a Tampa Bay Devil Ray season ticket holder.
Future Gopher Player’s Magical Night
Soon to be Minnesota Gopher basketball player Blake Hoffarber won an ESPY two years ago for his famous shot from the seat of his pants in the Minnesota State Basketball Tournament. Golden Gopher sports unofficial website gopherhole.com recently ran a set of photos of some of the people Hoffarber met on that magical night at the ESPYs. Photos include Hoffarber with Terrell Owens, Lebron James, Baron Davis and Maria Sharapova. Certainly a dream come true for a junior in high school.
Text Message Ban will Challenge Tubby
Responding to complaints from athletes, a top NCAA panel voted Tuesday to eliminate the use of text messaging in college recruiting. If endorsed next week by school presidents and chancellors on the Division I Board of Directors, the measure will take effect August 1st. The rules change would limit electronically transmitted correspondence to recruits to e-mail and faxes only within current NCAA guidelines.
The rule makers feel that text messaging is too intrusive in high school players' lives and because of cell phone costs, their pocketbooks. Many coaches are frustrated with the ban stating that coaches need to contact recruits through modern means, the same way teenagers often chat with friends and family, to build relationships. Despite coach push back, it looks like the rule will pass and recruiting will become more difficult for college coaches.
Recruiting is definitely an art that Gopher coach Tubby Smith is good at, but with all of the current restrictions and upcoming text message ban, Tubby may have to work a little harder, be a little more creative to draw the attention of high school basketball players. I am looking forward to Tubby making the carefully planned and timed chess moves to secure the athletes the University needs.
Big Ten Tournament
The Ninth Annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge tournament match-ups have been announced and the Minnesota Golden Gophers have drawn a first round meeting with the Florida State Seminoles. The game will be played on Tuesday, Nov. 27, at 6:30 p.m., in Tallahassee, Fla. The game will be televised on the ESPN2 network.
"I'm very excited to be part of the ninth annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge," Gophers head basketball coach Tubby Smith said in an interview with gophersports.com. Smith has coached against Seminoles head coach Leonard Hamilton in the past and knows it will be a challenge to play the Seminoles on their home floor, but he said "the Gophers will be ready."
The Gophers hold a 3-5 all time record in the Challenge. Last year's team was beaten by Clemson 90-68 at Williams Arena. Hopefully, the Gophers basketball team can contend in this year's tournament under Tubby Smith's guidance and not get blown out.
Travis Busch back at The Barn
Minnesota's Mr. Basketball 2005 is coming back home. After a short stay at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, Travis Busch has transferred to the University of Minnesota. He hopes to see his first Big Ten action this upcoming season under new Gopher basketball head coach Tubby Smith.
"When you grow up in Minnesota, this is where you want to play," Busch said in an interview for gopherhole.com. "It's amazing to practice in here everyday and play in Williams Arena. It's awesome. It's a dream come true."
On a side note, Tubby Smith was in the house Wednesday night for the Minnesota Timberwolves game against the Dallas Mavericks. His introduction from the Target Center PA announcer triggered raucous applause. It would have been a standing ovation if Timberwolves fans weren't so worn out from watching the Wolves play.
Kentucky has No Love for Tubby
Kentucky Wildcat fans have a website dedicated to the firing of Tubby Smith. It is unbelievable how negatively critical they were about Tubby Smith's coaching in Kentucky. On the website are merchandise t-shirts that read "Tuck Fubby, fire Tubby Smith." The fans of the Kentucky Wildcats will not settle for second place in the SEC, whereas if the Minnesota Gophers finished second in the Big Ten, Gophers' fans would be elated.
The hatred of Tubby Smith in Kentucky is all the better for the Minnesota Gophers men's basketball team. Tubby Smith is the shot in the arm the team needed, and Tubby Smith will only attract more fans while helping the team win. His recruiting ability is second to none in the nation, and he will bring the Minnesota Gophers men's basketball team not only players within Minnesota, but great talent from around the United States.
Tubby Will Help Sell Tickets
Minnesota Golden Gopher Basketball Fans have been fired up about Tubby Smith. From the day he walked to the podium at Williams Arena with hundreds of Golden Gopher fans chanting "Tubby! Tubby!" to the now busy Gopher ticket office, fans have jumped on the proverbial Gopher Basketball band wagon.
"This is what it's all about," Tubby Smith said Friday after being introduced as the new coach at Minnesota. "I feel the love already."
Joel Maturi definitely met his goal of finding a big-name coach who would sell Gopher season tickets and energize the lethargic fans. Maturi shelled out $1.75 million a year for seven years to lure Smith away from Kentucky and, more importantly, to lure the once vocal fan base of the Minnesota Golden Gophers back into Williams Arena stands.
Minnesota Names Tubby Smith New Head Coach
University of Minnesota Athletics Director Joel Maturi announced that Tubby Smith has been named the 16th head basketball coach for the Golden Gophers.
Tubby Smith has spent the past 10 seasons as the head coach at the University of Kentucky Wildcats. Smith led the Wildcats to the 1998 national championship, four "Elite Eight" appearances and six "Sweet Sixteen" finishes. Smith has made 14 straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament spanning through his 10 years with Kentucky, two seasons at Georgia and his final two seasons at Tulsa.
Tubby Smith is known for winning games. His record at Kentucky was 263-83, wowser - he has definitely proven he can win games and the Gophers need his talent behind the whistle. Maturi said, "We're extremely excited to bring a coach of Tubby Smith's caliber to the University of Minnesota. His record on the court speaks for itself, but more importantly, he is an educator of young men and has unquestioned integrity to lead this program to the highest level."
Welcome to Minnesota Tubby, we look forward to the positive changes you can bring to our great Golden Gophers Basketball team!
