The Varsity Theater located at 1308 4th Street SE in Minneapolis, Minnesota opened in 1915 as a Vaudeville Theatre. The popularity of movies and the subsequent decline in popularity of Vaudeville type shows caused the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis to make drastic changes. The Theatre was redesigned by local designer Liebenberg & Kaplan into a movie theatre in 1928. The Varsity Theater became the University of Minnesota's most convenient movie house from that point until the 1980's. The introduction of large cinemas led to the demise of the Minneapolis Varsity Theater. The art Deco Theatre's marquee went dark in the 1990's after a failed attempt to turn the classic Varsity Theater into a nightclub. Thanks to a lot of hard work and vision, the theatre has recently become an excellent venue for concerts, theatre and the arts in the heart of Dinkytown.
