The Minnesota Lynx basketball team was established in 1998 and started play in 1999.  Twelve thousand fans turned out to watch the Minnesota Lynx's inaugural game in the Minneapolis' Target Center and these spectators were rewarded for their support when the Lynx beat the Detroit Shock 68-51.  The Minnesota Lynx went on to finish 15-17 overall; not amazing, but also not too shabby for a brand new franchise.

Minnesota Lynx owner, Glen Taylor, also owns the Minnesota Timberwolves.  After growing up in the tiny farm town of Comfrey, Minnesota Glen Taylor went on to invest well in local Minnesota business and propel himself to a rank of 149 on the Forbes 400.  The Minnesota Lynx basketball team is coached by Don Zierden, another Minnesota native, who came to the team in December 2006.  Though the Minnesota Lynx struggled through the first few season of Zierden's career, things are looking back up for the Minnesota Lynx. With the addition of hometown hero, Lindsay Whalen to the Minnesota Lynx Roster in 2010, Minnesota Lynx fan support reached an all time high.
