The University of Minnesota Twin Cities is home to the Golden Gopher athletic teams. The Uof M has a rich history filled with competitive Golden Gopher sports teams including Gopher basketball, Gopher football, Gopher hockey and more.
The University of Minnesota Twin Cities was originally built in the early 1850's and is the oldest and largest part of the University of Minnesota system. The University adopted the Gopher moniker thanks to Minnesota being named the "Gopher State" by the union in 1857. The golden adjective was added in the 1930's when the University of Minnesota Gophers wore gold jerseys and gold pants. Legendary KSTP-AM radio announcer Halsey Hall coined the term "Golden Gophers" in reference to the team's all-gold uniform. The golden term stuck and the University amended their formal moniker to the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Today all of the Gophers Varisty Teams officialy play under the name University of Minnesota Golden Gophers.
The Golden Gophers are members of the Big Ten Conference and the Western Collegiate Hockey Association in the NCAA. Most of the facilities that the teams use for training and competitive play are located on the East Bank of the Minneapolis campus. There are arenas for Gopher Men's and Women's basketball (Williams Arena) as well as hockey (Mariucci Arena and Ridder Arena). The Golden Gophers football team plays at the TCF Bank Stadium is on the east bank of the University of Minnesota. Collectively the Golden Gophers Arenas are known as Stadium Village.
The Golden Gophers Men's Basketball team has been rejuvenated thanks to the addition of new head coach Tubby Smith. The men play their games at Williams Arena, which can seat 14,000 fans when the Williams Arena Seating Chart is at capacity. Students refer to Williams Arena as the "barn" and the student section as the "barnyard". In this large Minneapolis market, fans are always looking for college basketball tickets! The achievements of the Golden Gophers Men's basketball team include appearances at the Final Four and several Big Ten titles. The Gopher basketball team has also produced NBA legends like Kevin McHale, Flip Saunders and Bobby Jackson.
