The Minnesota Gopher Basketball season has come and gone.  The 2011 season started with promise and hope, but ended in major disappointment.  The Minnesota Gophers defeated the North Carolina Tar Heels and West Virginia Mountaineers in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off Tournament and captured the 1st place Trophy.  The team was hovering around the 15th Ranking in the National Poll.

By the end of the season, the Minnesota Gophers did not qualify for the NCAA Tournament or the National Invitational Tournament.  They lost 9 out of 10 games to finish the season.  The Minnesota Gophers finished the season with an overall record of 17-14 and 6-12 in the Big Ten.  It started with so much promise and ended in a tough way.  Star guard Al Nolen was injured and Devoe Joseph left the program.  Losing those two players left Tubby Smith without a point guard and disrupted the team play.

Tubby Smith will return as head coach and some nice recruits will be coming in.  Trevor Mbakwe has decided to return to Minnesota instead of the NBA Draft and that will be a huge bonus.  Mbakwe was a 2nd team All-Big Ten player.  Hopefully next year can have more consistency and we get back to the Big Dance.
